Traditional Jiu Jitsu was practiced in Japan and was the unarmed method of combat for the samurai. Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art. In the early 1900’s Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese born Jiu Jitsu fighter, immigrated to Brazil. He taught members of the Gracie Family the art of Jiu Jitsu and the Gracie family modified the original version of the art. The result, through decades of study and testing, is now known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Jiu Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts on the planet. It is an amazing tool for self-defense. However, the training method can be rigorous both physically and mentally. Jiu Jitsu requires the mind and body to work together. The harmony of the mind body connection leads to a workout like no other. Jiu Jitsu not only improves your physical state, it improves your mental state as well.
All martial arts are beneficial. Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art and the training method is such that you can practice at or near full power without hurting your partner. It is very difficult to practice a striking art at full power without seriously injuring yourself or you’re your partner. It is not about the art. It is about the training method.
Jiu Jitsu is traditionally practiced in the Gi, a traditional Japanese uniform consisting jacket and loose fitting pants. No Gi Jiu Jitsu is practiced without the traditional uniform and is similar to wrestling with submissions allowed.
